Chrysalism is a generative art project exploring the intersection of seemingly disparate disciplines in order to expose new ways of seeing and being while we are still in the genesis of this emerging space. Only at this unique meeting point of technology and art can we play so creatively and experimentally. We have an overarching objective and purpose; to find ways to nurture a circular economy between technology and nature by utilising a creative thinking pathway.
For the concept we started by examining how humans have looked for inspiration and guidance. Some of the most ancient records we can trace back show evidence of looking to the sky and the natural world around us for symbolic representation and archetypal models, which humans have learnt from for thousands of years. Some of the earliest records of human life hold traces of our relating to the objects in the sky, and to icons depicting other living species aside from our own. From this observation of nature and cosmos, humans were able to investigate the way things worked and use this understanding as patterns and parameters in which to understand our lives in relation to the whole.
Through scientific study and the advance of technology the interconnectedness of the physical world has been revealed, giving us proof that the theories previously thought to be beliefs, are in fact concrete. We wanted to look at what could happen if we brought some of these principles to our approach within the digital collectible space and what would be born from a cross pollination of real-world knowledge within a generative system.
Collaboration and symbiosis exist throughout the natural world, the eco-systems we live in are complex models of this harmonic exchange. However, at this moment in history we are witnessing the effects of what happens when these systems are mistreated. Our aim is to invite attention to the wonders of nature and we wanted to provide an educational journey through part of a lifecycle to demonstrate them.
Metamorphosis is a particularly fascinating part of a lifecycle, the incredible occurrences happening inside a cocoon where an entire organism breaks down and regenerates into something else, yet retains an essential part of itself to rebuild from. This process shows that all things can be decomposed and reused allowing us to present a concept where one thing would have to be sacrificed to evolve into another. Applying this to the space, we might find a pathway to see the potential facility of digital collectibles beyond ownership and financial investment vehicles, even beyond artistry. Metamorphosis exemplifies we can change the output of systems from within.
